The sync generator requires clean DC voltage (typically 12V, 15V, or 24V depending on the series). Dried-out capacitors in the display unit’s power supply create high-frequency ripple. The sync detector sees this ripple as a false pulse or no pulse. – voltage measures OK on a multimeter, but an oscilloscope shows 1V of noise.
