Verdict Solid and entertaining for fans of supernatural horror and The Conjuring Universe. Strong atmosphere and performances make it one of the better modern studio horror sequels/prequels, even if it doesn't fully reinvent the genre.

The film takes place in the 1950s, four years before the events of the first "Annabelle" movie. The story revolves around a group of orphaned girls who are brought to a remote farmhouse by a kindly priest, Father Kent (Stephen Dorff). The girls soon discover that the house is haunted by a malevolent spirit, which they later learn is the creation of a former resident, a brilliant but twisted scientist named Dr. Annabelle Higgins (Miranda Otto).
